The plants of intelligence

It’s potentially a bad sign that I’ve now just resorted to using whatever happens to be playing in foobar as a post title.

It’s been what I will laughingly refer to as a long time since my last post update, and as usual, I feel some obligation that I must update constantly. Perhaps I have to make up for the fact that my friends BIG MIKE and Adam never update theirs.

As usual, I’ve not really been up to much, nothing interesting has happened, I’ve simply been playing Borderlands a lot. I’ve now got a level 50 Roland, a level 18 Brick, and a level 6 Lilith/Mordecai. From what I’ve seen so far, I don’t like one character entirely more than the others. It’s sort of tough to explain, but in many games I find that there’s one character who often caters to everything I look for in a character. In Borderlands for example, in terms of aesthetics, I think Roland looks like the best character, he also suits my playstyle (I like to play support characters) and I usually have a preference for ARs and shotguns. Thing is, occasionally I really like revolvers, and Borderlands happens to have a wide selection of awesome ones. Anyway I digress, that’s all good, but Brick is the best character personality wise, followed by Mordecai and Roland. You might think it odd, but to me, a character’s personality is oddly important. By that I mean, mostly, what they scream.

By my logic, if you’re going to be playing as a character for an extended period of time, you want them to be roaring out something cool, yes? That’s the reason I play as Hoffman in Gears too. Also compare Ryu in NG2, where I’ve previously mentioned how the japanese dub sounds like 1000x better in combat, whereas the english dub guy sounds like he’s trying to blast out the biggest turd ever. Brick has cool “taunts” and so on, Mordecai has a hilarious death cry. Roland’s aren’t bad exactly, he’s just..stereotypically black. It’s sort of bizarre, when you look at Roland’s character, he’s an “ex Crimson Lance” hardened merc type, in the intro movie he’s like get that camera out of my face fool, but then when you start playing he’s all DAYUUUM BIOOOTCH. I like Brick more, he’s got great callouts, not to mention awesome “I’M GETTING IN A CAR” noises. Oh right, you can’t forget his Berserker noises which are fucking hilarious.

As good as Borderlands is, it’s not as good as I was expecting. It seems somewhat different to the 2007 version, here’s a list of things that were either implied to be in the game, or outright stated as being in the game that, to my knowledge, are not:

  • Randomly generated dungeons/instances/doglegs
  • Character enhancements (aka buying upgrades for your character to increase reload speed and so on, this seems to have been worked into the game with weapon profiec)
  • Character unique missions (Roland looking for the brigadier, Lilith for the other Siren etc)

At least that’s all I can remember, I would’ve honestly liked if the characters were a little more balanced and well, unique. Lilith for example is broken in terms of PvP, she has a daze effect that basically equals auto-win. Not to mention phasewalk which makes her invisible. Roland’s turret is useless as it only fires in an arc in front of it, you can just stand behind it and completely negate the point of it. I was sort of hoping that the characters would have 3-5 skills they could use, but in-fact they only have one skill each. I think the talent trees could use a bit of re-working as well, Roland has a lot of relatively pointless talents, everyone does.

You know what else I would like? Something concrete to work for. Right now I’m basically just teleporting from zone to zone, killing everything and looking through the shops and chests to find some good stuff. Specifically, I’m looking for a revolver, a bloody unforgiven legendary (I think that’s the one) with 900 damage, crit damage bonus and high accuracy, preferably with the model that looks like the dirty harry gun. It’s sort of hard trying to find something that specific when there’s so many guns. I’m not really sure what, but it would be neat if they added in “something” for me to work for over a long period of time other than increasing my weapon levels to 50. Heck I dunno, maybe add in DLC missions where you can build a gun you want over a very long quest-line? Nothing too precise of course, just like selecting what the different characteristics would be etc, I for example, like to stray away from elemental weapons, I’m not really sure why, but I prefer to use normal weapons, however I do have a corrosive atlas revolver which I employ against Crimson Lance (and it looks comical how fast it shoots thanks to my character’s buffed fire rate) as it stands, my Roland’s build and gear loadout are as follows:

(I think aid station might be a tad pointless, and I honestly swap those 5 points about constantly, but for arguments sake, I’ll put them in aid station)

  • Hyperion Crimson Cobra Combat Rifle
  • 271 damage.
  • 97 Accuracy
  • 15 Rate of Fire.
  • 52~ bullets to a clip/magazine/whatever (around that, I’m not sure how many it has by default)
  • Jakobs Fearsome(?) Thunder Sniper Rifle
  • 960 damage
  • 96 Accuracy
  • 0.4 Rate of Fire
  • 17 shots
  • Dahl(?) Terrible Matador Shotgun
  • 170×12 damage
  • 35 Accuracy
  • 1.2 Rate of Fire
  • 36~ shots
  • Tediore Bloody Equaliser Revolver
  • 760 damage
  • 86 Accuracy
  • 1 Rate of Fire
  • 5 shots (default 2)

I also occasionly use (against Crimson Lance and Eridian)

  • Atlas Vitriloic Revolver
  • 400 damage [x3 Corrosive]
  • 90~ Accuracy
  • 1.6 Rate of Fire
  • 8 shots
  • Maliwan Scoped Destructor
  • 1700 damage [x4 Shock]

Of course, I’m going by memory for these stats, those are rough estimates. As for other gear, I’m using a level 6 corrosive artifact on the turret, from what I’ve seen from testing, that’s by far the most useful one. Corrosive in general seems to be the superior elemental damage. Melts armour, melts flesh, melts faces, spreads to others, increases the damage you do to them, has no drawback from what I’ve seen. As for shields, I’m using one with 1620~ ish capacity and no bonus effects, just a “very high capacity” one, previously throughout the game I used health regen ones, but now that I have stat and aid station, it’s pretty much obsolete and I just go for the shield with the most capacity, I’ve also been looking for a 60% health shield, but no luck as of yet. Grenades likewise, I used transfusion for most of the game before swapping to corrosive bouncing betties, which I enjoy throwing into the air like fireworks. As for class mod, I’m using something like this

  • 650 Heavy Gunner Mod
  • +75% Weapon magazine size
  • +3 impact
  • +4 metal storm
  • +3 overload
  • +50% Weapon fire rate

I don’t actually know what the rate of fire increase is to be honest, as I can’t see it. I just know that it certainly does increase fire rate. Supposedly they are patching it so weapons can display more than 4 lines of text, that will be really helpful, I must say. From what I’ve experimented around with, that is by far the best mod. I do keep a +20 ammo regen mod in my backpack too, but frankly I never need to use it unless I’m running around and have “low” ammo and want to recharge whilst I’m out of combat or something. Shocktrooper seems pointless, Commando also seems pointless, Rifleman seems pointless and Tactician seems like it “could” be useful. Frankly, increasing weapon magazine size and rate of fire > increasing the other stuff. I think people tend to underestimate how useful magazine size and rate of fire is.

As for weapons, I usually look for two things, raw power and high accuracy. I tend to like Hyperion weapons a lot, but as for which weapons I’ve used the most, well, I dunno, I think there’s a way to check on an xbox profile thing, but I dunno. I would guess Tediore, as I’ve found several great Tediore legendary weapons that have lasted me a very long time. I don’t really like weapons that fire more than one bullet at once. I did use a Skullmasher for a very long time, but I find that Skullmashers and Mashers tend to be pretty sucky, maybe just for Roland, maybe they rock for Mordecai. I only use shotguns for multi-projectile weapons. Speaking of which I have had shotguns far more powerful than the one I’m currently using and listed above, but they had too small a magazine size. In comparison, once I get metal storm going, my current shotgun is ridiculous, I got ambushed by 2 badass fire skags, 1 corrosive and 1 normal badass alpha skag all at the same time (not badass, but I forget what the level 51 versions are called) and well, let’s just say that my shotgun destroyed all of them. That’s my go to weapon, if something is pissing me off, I swap to the ol’ faithful and just run up to them and unload 34578 bullets into their face for maximum damage.

Overall, I really want to like Borderlands, I DO really like it, I just really hope they support it heavily with DLC. I want to see new areas, more storyline, character specific missions, more ways to make the characters unique, possibly even a new character. I know there’s the zombie DLC coming soon, however details are scarce, all we know are that there are at least 3 achievements/missions:

“House of the Ned”/”Braaaaaaains”/”Jakob’s Fodder”

I think they could increase the level cap and add a 5th tier set of talents, or just add an extra one onto the 4th tier. I’ll be frank, the guided missile and supply packs are useless. Increasing the level cap to 55 or 60 would yield some benefits methinks, it would let people stretch out a bit more, show some more diversity in builds and what not.

I guess I’ll just have to wait and see what there is planned. What with that and Dragon Age, Bayonetta and Mass Effect 2 all coming out in several months, I’ve got plenty to keep me occupied.

What’s that? No Modern Warfare 2? Shit, son, I don’t know what to think about MW2. On the one hand I want to play the single player (multiplayer doesn’t really interest me THAT much, I would not play it religiously like most MLG prozzzzzzzz) as I really enjoyed the single player in COD4, right? Sure the story telling isn’t exactly great, but I found it immersive and just, well, fun. It’s the same reason I enjoyed COD1 so much way back in the day. I never really played COD2 or COD3 however..mostly as they came out in the deadzone era of when I played no games other than WoW. (like, 2005-2006) I really don’t want to support Activision, I don’t want to give them my money. It’s a dilemma and it pisses me off, Infinity Ward are being huge dicks and whilst no, it doesn’t affect me really, I’m not playing it on PC, I’m not playing MP, only really the SP. I still don’t want to give ‘em my money. I’m contemplating renting it, but special forces looks like it could be really fun..uh, why Activision? Why you gotta be cunts? Do you enjoy angering me? Do you want me to come and strangle you?

Before I finish, I’ll quickly touch on two things. First, 9 episodes into Ergo Proxy and I’m still confused as to what the fuck is going on. Pino however, is awesome. Second, this FAGS thing with IW/MW2/Adam Sessler and so on? Laughable. IW made an un-funny joke and Sessler has a fit about it, both parties in this case are like bickering three year olds, it’s just a word, and in-case you want to bring up “hurr u woldnt like it if i called u ____”. No, I wouldn’t like it. I wouldn’t dislike it either. I would have no opinion on the matter as I wouldn’t give a flying hootananny, neither should you. Honestly it’s sad that I, of all people, am berating others for being stupid and angry.

Much like 90% of the things I can talk about on this blog, it can be summarised as such:

It pisses me off.

I’M MAD.

Media

Techstuff, Stuff You Should Know, etc. Howstuffworks podcasts and Wikipedia articles are a savior in slow internet. I took advantage of some time to listen to some suggestions: The Moth (Dad) This American Life (Liam), both awesome. Podcast and slow internet-capable website recommendations are welcome.

The premiere episode of the sixth season of House is the best I’ve ever seen, and I was euphoric from watching it, calling the day in which it was viewed a “really really good day.” Stargate Universe? Awesome, despite Blandy McBland as the main guy, but the SG writers have a knack for developing good characters out of Blandy MyBlandersons (see Colonel O’Neill (movie), John Sheppard). I watched the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy miniseries (good, but eh-ish). I watched Breaking Bad. Very very well made show. AMC is proving itself to be a mini HBO. I have 5 seasons of House on 5 discs. Watching recommendations are welcome.

I beat Mega Man 2. Granted, using savestates once I learned about them (about the first Dr. Wily level). Still working on Hell in Cave Story. Oh if you had savestates, Cave Story. I currently have waiting in the wings: Bioshock, Crysis, Medal of Honor Airborne, GTA: San Andreas, Age of Mythology, HL2 Episode 2 on commentary mode, HL1 replay, Minerva: Metastasis replay, risky Chinese bootlegged Wolfenstein and Evangelion games, and every Atari 2600, NES, Master System, Turbografx 16, SNES, Genesis, Neo Geo, N64, GB, GBC, and GBA game *ahem* accessible to me. Recommended playing order or game suggestions are welcome.

I’m caught up on The Walking Dead, Fullmetal Alchemist (Japanese releases) and Scott Pilgrim. Awesome, awesome, and hilarious, respectively. Finished Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth. Profound. I have a world of comics *cough* accessible to me, recommendations are welcome.

I’m reading my Fullmetal Alchemist book, The Ties That Bind. It’s not very good, unlike the manga and the show. I’m taking a crack at Freakonomics. I read a long conversation about Neon Genesis Evangelion, namely about the meaning of the ending, symbolism (mostly dealing with red/blue, Asuka/Rei contrasts (did you realize Unit-00 is blue, Unit-02 is Red, and Unit-01 is PURPLE? Can you say epiphany?)), mythology and it’s allegories, backstory, and meaning and significance of the ending. I’m almost done with Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar, which is fantastic. I listened to Speaker for the Dead, the sequel to Ender’s Game, most of which during a night of either insomnia or being too gripped in the story to go to sleep. It’s amazing, it’s potentially better than Ender’s Game, but I don’t know. I have waiting in the wings: The Catcher in the Rye and Animal Farm, the rest of Blink, and a ton of Wikipedia articles including but not limited to Time Travel, Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics. Recommended reading order is welcomed.

I’ve seen The Passion of the Mao (really stupid), The Boat That Rocked, an averageish, but still charming British movie, Watchmen Director’s Cut, the added scenes were poorly acted and unnecessary in a way, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, quality Miyazaki. I have waiting in the wings: Fantasia, METALLIC ATTRACTION: KUNG FU CYBORG, Ocean Waves, or Umi ga Kikoeru since there’s no English title on it, The Founding of a Republic (60th anniversary propaganda movie), The Hunchback of Notre Dame, G.I. Joe (Yes, I saw it playing in the store and it looked superbly ridiculous), The Red Balloon (Short Film), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Wall (Pink Floyd), The Wrestler, Waltz with Bashir, and Fellini’s 8 ½. Recommended viewing order is welcomed.

Kimi ni Todoke (Reaching You) episode 5 review; Pain, uncertainty, loneliness, and Sawako's AT Field can no longer protect her.

Well, this episode picks up with Sawako still being confused about how to react to the rumors affecting Yoshida, Yano, and Kazehaya. The next school day brings the start of midterms and the students have to sit alphabetically instead using the seating chart, so Sawako doesn’t get to sit by the group. She sees Yoshida and Yano and thinks they’ve never gotten angry or mad at her. Sawako quietly goes to her seat, and Yano notices that Sadako isn’t her usual self.

As Sawako is sitting watching Yano and Yoshida, she thinks that it feels like she never had that seat, like everything was a dream, she wanted to help people and not get in their way, and she hasn’t even been able to clear this misunderstanding. Sawako thinks that even if she finds the source of the rumors she just might hurt them again if she gets near them. Hurt, how could I even fix the hurt, Sawako wonders if she should go back to the old way and distance herself from the others? As Sawako thinks about distancing herself from the others, tears begin to flow, and when she thinks of Kazehaya, her inspiration, she really begins to cry.

No, Sawako tells herself, she’s doesn’t remember how to be alone, the feelings of people being nice to her, and her being nice to people are too strong, she can’t remember how to return to the old days. How did she ever manage or accept being alone,  Sawako’s forgotten everything.

As Sawako’s walking home from school she finds Kazehaya waiting for her, he tells her he doesn’t understand, don’t you like me, why are you avoiding me? She tells him not to talk with her, but she breaks down in tears and says she can’t say something she doesn’t mean. Kazehaya tells her to calm down and talk with him clearly so he can understand the situation. Well, Sawako spills the beans telling him about the rumors and how she feels she’s ruining Yoshida, Yano, and his reputation.

He tells her who gives a damn about rumors, where’s his say in the matter, it’s his decision who he hangs around with, he’ll do as he wishes, he’ll talk with who he wants to, and if he cared about rumors he wouldn’t be talking with her now. Sawako now understands that this is what she wanted, to have people who care for her, and to care for people. Once Sawako calms down, Kazehaya talks with her about Yano and Yoshida and the rumors, he tells Sawako to reverse the situation and think about how they would feel if they heard that their association with her was hurting her? Sawako says that she’d still want them to hang out with her. Kazehaya says that Yano and Yoshida most likely feel the same way.  Kazehaya tells her, in the end it’s up to the other person to decide, but he says that if he was Yano or Yoshida he’d feel uncomfortable if she started avoiding them. Yes, Sawako says she was over thinking, she needs to tell them her feelings, she wants to become their friends.

Later, we see Pin running into Yano in the hall and she’s pissed because she got pulled away from hearing what Sadako had to say, he tells her he doesn’t know what happened but quite blaming other people because you’ll run into more unreasonable situations in the future. In the library, Yano thinks of Sadako and how seriously she took her suggestion.

Then we see Ryuu having a talk with Yoshida, he asks her if he needs to comfort her? Hell no. He asks her if those rumors are bothering her? She goes on about how she must be stupid, she just doesn’t know, is Sadako really Sadako or a fake Sadako and is she using her? She tells him that people are saying that Sadako is spreading those rumors? How, by talking to herself, and she doesn’t seem that she has anyone to talk to. Well, Yoshida brings up the point that Sadako was talking with someone, and she said they weren’t friends and she is avoiding us. Then Yoshida brings up the “I’m sorry” point and the issue of why she just didn’t say she liked us?

Well, Ryuu says maybe Sadako doesn’t really like you, or she doesn’t care, or maybe she has other reasons. Ryuu tells her that if it’s really bothering her just ask Sadako, and he’ll comfort her if the answer is she doesn’t care. Later, Yoshida looks over the study book that Sadako made for her, and she becomes even more troubled and uncertain about the issue. Later, that night, Yano and Yoshida meet up and talk about the Sadako issue, and how Sadako hasn’t smiled since the rumors started. Yoshida wonders if Sadako’s so used to being alone if this is normal for her, and that thought makes her sad, that’s why she couldn’t leave her alone. Yano speculates that maybe Sadako became so used to every one’s attitude towards her that she really doesn’t understand emotions, even her own. Yano says that when she saw Sadako smile it made her happy. Yano also says that we thought we knew everything about her but there are many things we don’t understand. Yoshida speculates that they never got a clear answer from her but they also haven’t told her how they feel, and they never got to finish their conversation with her. Yano asks Yoshida that after all this thinking and worrying about Sadako, don’t we already love her? We’re already friends?

At that moment, Sawako thinks to herself that we don’t know other peoples feelings unless we ask, and they won’t know ours unless we tell them. Sawako resolves to tell them how she feels and ask how they feel, she can be comfortable with this.

The next school day, Sawako is building up her courage to talk with Yano and Yoshida in a bathroom stall, she’s nervous but doesn’t hate the feeling. Sawako hears some girls talking about the rumors of Yano and Yoshida being her backup,  and she confronts them by says they’re not her backup and both of them are nice people. The group just laughs at her, and one of the girls tells her to shut up(the French doll?, I can’t tell) and backs Sawako against the wall and calls Yano and Yoshida the criminal and the slut. As the group laughs at Sadako, she balls her fist up and …? Well, cliffhanger time, that’s all for this episode.

Well, this episode had it all; pain, uncertainty, loneliness, melodrama, angst, and tears (including my own). As Sawako’s slowly let her guard down and began to open herself up to others, she tasted the feelings of friendship and love for the first time and discovered she liked these new found but confusing emotions.

When we first met Sawako, she basically surrounded herself and protected herself with her masks, the mask of Sadako that others projected on to her which she embraced, and the mask of emotional disconnection with the world around her, the mask of her own creation. Basically, Sawako’s masks were her AT Field, her protection, her curse, her barrier, and Sawako had to discover like Shinji that in order to truly make human and emotional connections you have to let others in on your real feelings and emotions. Sawako comes to this understanding towards the end of the episode when she realises that “you won’t know other people’s feelings unless you ask”.

Throughout the majority of NGE, Shinji pouted and disconnected from others because he only viewed the world from a “nobody understands me” point of view and he made no real effort to bother with how others around him felt. Yes, Sawako now understands that communication and feelings have to be a two way street, life’s uncertain but she can live with it. For a brief period Sawako considered trying to recreate her AT Field, but after her exposure to human connection I don’t think that she had the stomach to embrace her seperation again.

One other point I would like to make is that all the guys in this episode seemed have a calming and thoughtful influence on the girls: Kazehaya helped Sawako understand that she needs to tell Yano and Yoshida how she really feels; Pin helped Yano come to the realization that problems and misunderstandings don’t just fix themselves, you have to do it; and finally Ryuu helped Yoshida realise that just stewing in your own doubts does nothing.

Oh, this episode just made me a big Yano fan, she really showed me a level of subtle thoughtfulness and sensitivity that you really don’t see that often in supporting characters.

The Otaku Diaries Take a Look at Careers, Escapism, Hobbies

The Reverse Thieves have their fifth Otaku Diaries entry up, leading off with a beautiful poem by Hisui. Aside from the poem though, I recommend you check it out and the rest of the Otaku Diaries entries, as I’m a fan of fan analysis (no pun intended), and even with the limited sample size I still think it provides a lot of interesting windows into trends and behaviors among otaku.

Two things jumped out at me in particular with this entry, the change in trends from mostly people interested in computers being into anime to anime reaching a wider demographic, as well as the concept of anime used as an escape.

As someone who went through an arts program in college, what I noticed is that among my peers few were into anime to the extent that I was. You could still find people who enjoyed anime to be sure (some of my art school friends and I decided to marathon all of Evangelion in one day Freshman year) but most of my classmates did not treat anime as something worth looking at for any extended period. When I remembered that the same classmates for the most part had never even watched The Simpsons, I began to see the extent to which those who had chosen this path had dedicated themselves to it at the expense of other things. That’s not to say they were mistaken in their decision, but the idea that they had almost no exposure to things which I considered to be common knowledge made me sense a palpable difference in mindset and what we valued. A lot of times it didn’t even occur to them to take a look at anime at all. I was also the only art student I knew of who even attended the school’s anime club at all (though I had to stop going after sophomore year to give myself more time to get work done).

Contrast this with my friends in college who were mostly computer science majors (with some chemistry, business, and other types mixed in), and I would have to say that the majority of them enjoyed anime, video games, things which tended towards the nerdish side. They weren’t solely into nerd hobbies, as some enjoyed sports and weightlifting and playing guitar and such, but they always seemed more ready to accept anime, even if I couldn’t necessarily convince them to watch Cardcaptor Sakura. Why the stark difference between the two groups?

“Fine Artist” and “Geek” do not stereotypically cross over much, and I think it has to do with the idea of right brain vs left brain, and that what brings enjoyment to one type does not apply to the other. All the more interesting then that there were a handful of people I knew who were actually Art/Computer Science double majors, and that out of all of them though, I felt that they more often than not tended towards their Computer Science side. I wonder if it’s impossible to be both in even ratios, and I have to also wonder where I myself fit, because even though I was not a computer science major I did not fit the Fine Arts mold entirely either. Another thing to note was that Geek and Illustrator tend to have much more crossover than Geek and Fine Artist, and the reason behind that lies in the concept that Fine Artists’s sense of aesthetics supposedly exists in a world different from that of the Illustrator, which is such a complex topic I’m gonna have to save it for another day.

Now with escapism via anime, and the active denial of using anime as such, I think it has to do very much with otaku trying to defend their shows or their status as otaku. It’s the idea that anime fans are using anime to avoid reality, whether it’s by moe shows, science fiction, pornography, whatever, no one wants to be told that they’re not living in the real world. In some cases, people will deny outright that anime is an escape, and in other cases they will talk about how escape isn’t that bad of a thing and more people should do it. Either way though, it does have this tinge of defensiveness, even if it’s completely valid to be defensive. After all, what else would you expect people to do if they’re perceiving someone’s outside comment as an attack?

Harroween in Hirakatashi
